19 June, in Oran, Algeria, to an Algerian father and an Egyptian mother
Why this level: The two sources disagree on the year: Arabic Wikipedia says 1978, English Wikipedia says 1980. Day, month and place agree. The year stays 'likely' until a primary source settles it.
Asloh Araby (2012) — ten songs plus a sketch; the title argues rap's roots are Arab, not Western
2022 — first collaboration with Wegz, a WE ad track, reached #14 worldwide on YouTube
Why this level: The view count and chart position come from press coverage at release, not from a measurement platform. Recorded as published reporting with its date.
Active — continued El Kabeer Awy through consecutive seasons up to 2024
Milestones
Popularity and importance are two different things. These are the songs that changed something, each with the reason.
His best-known purposeful song: life as a train, with people getting on and off. The beat samples Galt MacDermot's 'Coffee Cold' — itself a production lesson in Arabic rap at the time.
Mekky's return to rap after years away, in a nostalgic narrative mode rather than the comic one. He posted it himself, so the official link is confirmed.
A bridge between generations: Mekky narrates rap's early days, Wegz carries it on. An ad track, but his widest digital reach and his first link to the current generation.
A song about Facebook when Facebook was everything in Egypt — 2011. It captures a whole social moment in the language people used then.
One of his earliest songs, from the same year as H Dabour — the moment his name landed in film and rap at once.
This ranking is the archive's editorial pick, not an official chart — and open to revision.
